Gold rate in India, 24K, 22K and 18K explained

The number before the K tells you how pure the gold is. 24K gold is 99.9% pure and is mostly bought as coins and bars. 22K gold is 91.6% pure and is the usual choice for jewellery, because the added metals make it stronger for daily wear. 18K gold is 75% pure and is common in diamond and fashion pieces. Higher purity means a higher price per gram, so compare rates of the same carat only.

Why the gold rate changes

Indian gold rates follow the international price, which is set in US dollars, so the rupee's exchange rate matters as much as the global price. Import duty, interest rates and world events add to it. At home, demand rises in the wedding season and around festivals such as Dhanteras and Akshaya Tritiya, which can lift prices for a few days.

Gold rates in major cities

The base rate is close across the country, but a city's price can differ slightly because of local taxes, transport and jeweller premiums. Pick your city from the links below the FAQs for its own gold rate table and local notes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold rate in India today?

The cards at the top of the page show the live price per gram for 24K, 22K and 18K gold, with the time of the last update. The rate can change more than once a day when global prices move.

Which is better to buy, 22K or 24K gold?

24K suits coins and bars bought as savings, since it is the purest. 22K suits jewellery, because it is harder and holds its shape. Choose by purpose, not only by price.

Is the gold rate the same in every Indian city?

The base rate is very close everywhere. Small gaps appear because of local taxes, transport costs and the premium a jeweller adds. Check your city page for its own table.

Does the rate on this page include GST and making charges?

No. It is the price of the metal. A jewellery bill also adds making charges and GST, so the amount you pay is higher than gold weight multiplied by the rate.

How can I find out what my old gold is worth?

Use the calculator for an estimate, then get a purity test. The final value depends on purity and weight, and GoldCash offers a free test and valuation.
