Silver rate in India

Silver is quoted per gram and per kilogram. 999 silver is 99.9% pure and is used for coins and bars. Sterling silver, marked 925, is 92.5% pure and is used for jewellery and household articles. Silver often moves faster than gold in a day, because it is also used in industry, such as electronics and solar panels, as well as for savings and gifts.

Silver purity: 999, 925 and lower grades

999 silver is 99.9% pure and is the form used for coins and bars. 925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure and is used for most jewellery and household articles, because the added metal makes it harder. Items sold as silver-look or silver-plated carry only a thin layer of silver, so they are not valued at the silver rate. Always ask which purity a quote refers to.

Why the silver rate changes

Silver is priced internationally in US dollars, so the rupee's exchange rate matters as much as the global price. It is also used in electronics, solar panels and other industry, so factory demand and the world economy move its price alongside investor demand. At home, buying rises around Dhanteras, Diwali and the wedding season.

Silver rates in major cities

The base silver rate is close across the country, but a city's price can differ slightly because of local taxes, transport and jeweller premiums. Pick your city from the links below the FAQs for its own silver rate table and local notes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the silver rate in India today?

The cards at the top of the page show the live 999 silver price per gram and per kilogram, with the time of the last update. The rate can change more than once a day when global prices move.

Why does the silver rate not follow the gold rate?

Silver has its own demand from industry and its own supply. The two metals often move in the same direction, but not by the same amount or on the same day.

Should I choose 999 or 925 silver?

999 silver is the purest and suits coins and bars bought as savings. 925 sterling is harder and suits jewellery and daily-use articles. Choose by purpose, and ask for the purity mark and a bill.

Why is silver quoted per kilogram as well as per gram?

Bars and bulk purchases are traded by the kilogram, while coins and small items are priced by the gram. Both rates are shown so you can compare like with like.

Does the rate on this page include GST and making charges?

No. It is the price of the metal. A silver jewellery bill also adds making charges and GST, so the amount you pay is higher than silver weight multiplied by the rate.

How can I find out what my old silver is worth?

Use the calculator for an estimate, then get a purity test. The final value depends on purity and weight, and items that are silver-plated or have stones are valued differently. GoldCash offers a free test and valuation.
