Pongal, Akshaya Tritiya, Diwali and the wedding season are the busiest buying times. Because the city is a manufacturing base, many jewellers make their own pieces and take custom orders. Some South Indian bills show wastage or value addition (VA) in place of a making charge. Ask what it covers and how it is worked out, and compare the total for the same design across two shops.
Silver is bought as anklets, lamps and gift items. The rate is shown per gram and per kilogram. Ask for the purity mark, and a bill that states the weight and names the metal.

Many jewellers make their own pieces and accept custom orders. Agree the design, gold weight, charge and delivery date in writing, and keep the order slip with the final bill.
The base rate is very close across Tamil Nadu. Small gaps can come from local costs and jeweller premiums, so compare the final bill and not only the rate.
