In Kerala, gold is usually quoted per pavan, which is 8 grams. To find the metal price of one pavan, multiply the per-gram rate by 8. The price on a bill is higher, because making charges and GST are added, so compare the total for a pavan of the same design, not the metal price alone. Onam, Vishu, Akshaya Tritiya and the wedding season are the busiest times, and most jewellery is made in 22K (916) gold with a BIS hallmark.
Silver in Kochi is bought for baby jewellery, small lamps, plates and gift items. The rate is shown per gram and per kilogram. Ask for the purity mark, and ask whether the item is solid silver or only silver-plated.
